Week of Febrary 25 - March 1

This week we are celebrating Read Across America week and Dr. Seuss' birthday with a lot of fun and fanfare. While it's fun to do some of these silly things, like silly socks days, the focus is really on a great author who changed how children's books were written and inspired a love of reading for future generations.

Today we learned about Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth. We talked about their lives as slaves and leaders of the Underground Railroad. Many people consider them to be heroes. What qualities do you think a hero shows? Who is a hero to you?

Whe have been reading realistic fiction . We read FROM THE MIXED UP FILES OF MRS.BASIL E .FRANKWEILER and I read DIARY OF A WIMPY KID DOG DAYS for realistic fiction.The characters for THE  MIXED UP FILES OF MRS.BASIL E .FRANKWEILER are Cladia,Jamie,Mrs Basil E .Frankweiler.For Diary of a wimpy kid they are greg heffely,rodrick,Manny,Mom,Dad,Rowley. well, Im going  to tell you about Jamie and Manny . Jamie plays cards and likes to cheat.Manny gets anything he wants he gets free money .Jamie ran away, but manny did not. They both have a lot of money.They have bigger brothers.

Claudia has stuff alike with Rodrick. Rodrick is bossy and Claudia is,too.They both get an allowance for doing chores.They both keep secrets. Claudia has stuff different with Rodrick. Claudia ran away. Claudia like expensive food and clothes. She likes being clean and neat. She has a smaller 2 little brothers and 1 bigger brother. Rodrick has stuff different with Claudia. Rodrick did not ran away. He is grungy, likes heavy metal, and can be pretty gross. He has 2 little brothers

 The setting is diffrent from Weslandia than From The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs.Basil E. Frankweiler. The setting of Weslandia is in Wesley's backyard.  It can be wet or dry.Wesley made Weslandia .  Wesley knows a lot about Weslandia.  It's out side and can be muddy or dirty.
   The setting of The Mixed-Up Files is a big fancy "museum"! Claudia and Jamie know everything about the museum.  They are inside.  It's cleaner only a little muddy from the shoes.  The museum was already made.
   But they also have a few things incommon.  They have a place to escape the outside world.  They have a place to enjoy .  They have a place to have fun.  Those are similarities and differences in settings of the two stories.
